Kunfunadhoo Island, Baa Atoll, Maldives

All my dreams of that James Bondish entry into a luxury hotel came true here. Our seaplane landed at the resort’s private airport (a floating wooden plank in the middle of the ocean) and within seconds we were whisked into the waiting powerboat. Cold towel, fresh drinking coconut and a peppermint foot spray later we arrived to a welcome committee at the jetty of the private island of Soneva Fushi. Our shoes were taken away and sealed in a bag – this resort makes sure you unwind by following a strict “no shoes no news” policy. Welcome to Soneva Fushi – the most memorable, luxury family-friendly resort you perhaps will ever set your (shoeless) feet on. And oh, Madonna holidays here with her family – enough said?

Family Favourites:
  • Home to perhaps the largest and the most luxurious family-friendly villas in Maldives, all come with a beachfront, most with private pools and some even with slides from the kids’ room to the pool, ensuring sleep to swim for junior!
  • Christmas came early! A chocolate room (free – woohoo), open all day and late into the night, stacked with countless varieties of homemade chocolates, chocolate fondue, chocolate lollipops, chocolate cookies and anything else that can possibly contain chocolate (the lavender truffles are to die for!). Adjoining is the ice cream room that serves homemade ice cream (free again!).Not much of a sweet tooth? Fear not for the cold room next door stacks premium cheeses, salamis and gourmet salts from all around the world. No sweat – that’s free too.
  • Gaze at all of planet Saturn’s rings, planet Mars, the moon, Scorpion constellation, Vega star and other heavenly bodies from the observatory’s top-of-the-line telescope. Weekly child-friendly astronomy classes held.
  • Pop into the glass studio at the resort where you can watch renowned glass sculptors turn waste glass into objects of art. The kids loved watching the glass blowing in action!
  • Water babies can explore the resort’s stunning beaches, go snorkeling or diving into the reef, indulge in water sports or set on a dolphin cruise to watch these gorgeous creatures. We were taken to Hanifaru Bay to swim with the majestic manta rays – an absolute once in a lifetime experience for the family!
  • Holidays with kids are that much easier with a kids’ club and The Den at Soneva Fushi is by far the best I have ever seen. The dream-like multilevel structure comes with a music room, Lego room, dress-up room, mini cinema, mocktail bar, nap room and many work stations for art and craft activities, games, reading and more. Two children’s pool, a large, winding water slide, a pirate ship, a playground with swings and so much more made it heart wrenching for my kids to leave at the end of the day. Move aside face painting and shell collecting (though they have that too) for activities here range from milkshake making, stargazing at the observatory, documentary making, sailing trips, cooking, mini triathlon and more than you can ever imagine. No gaming consoles in sight, so perfect for that iPad-free holiday most parents are craving for.The staff is fantastic and is happy to give mummies and daddies time off whenever they want it. Pssst: their movie nights with dinner let us parents sneak in two dinners by ourselves. Bliss!
  • Fantastic food at its many innovative restaurants using top-of-the-line ingredients. Our last family lunch in their organic vegetable garden will be long remembered. And definitely grab a glass of their crystal and gem (I’m talking real jade here!) enhanced wellness waters.
  • A long list of family-friends activities parents and children can indulge in, be it exploring the island on bikes appointed to every villa, family picnics, cooking classes or just feeding the millions of bunnies that scurry the grounds here.
  • Movie under the stars! Catch a flick in the gorgeous open air Cinema Paradiso featuring the widest screen in the Indian Ocean. Special screenings from kid-friendly movies too.
Parent’s Perks:
  • Famed Six Senses spa, always ready to pamper.
  • A personal butler called Friday is appointed to every villa and gives you that “I want it now” kinda service.
  • Can’t tear the kids away from the kids’ club? Perfect time to experience one of the otherworldly experiences lined up for couples here, right from a Dom Perignon picnic on the resort’s surreal private sandbank to private seaplane rides.

Mandy’s Tip: This luxury family-friendly resort is also the most environmentally friendly one you’ll find. Everything here reflects Soneva’s SLOW LIFE (Sustainable-Local-Organic-Wellness Learning-Inspiring-Fun-Experiences) philosophy. Such a treat not to see plastic here – even ice buckets are made out of coconut shell!
